Devil’s Den is an unexpected natural treasure hidden away on private property near Williston, FL. A sinkhole filled with very clear water about 50 feet deep, it was named Devil’s Den because in the old days when people saw the steam from its 72 degree water rising up through its narrow opening on a cold morning, they thought it was coming from the pits of hell. Many people and animals apparently stumbled into it in prehistoric times, because their remains have been found there.
Nowadays, however, you don’t have to plunge through the hole, because a narrow natural tunnel into it has been enlarged and stairs have been installed. And it’s a well known site for scuba diving and snorkeling, and even a training center for scuba divers. It has several subterranean passages, a few fish and a turtle. And people in masks and fins.
