Chances are when you think of zoos, you don’t think about Fresno, California. Well, unless you’ve actually been there. But while the zoo in Fresno, encompassing only 39 acres, is not in the same league with such titanic zoological parks as those in San Diego or Omaha, it does have its own uniquely appealing character.
It began operation about a century ago, though of course it’s evolved quite a bit since then. It’s also changed monikers several times in the interim; at present, it’s officially known as the Chaffee Zoo, in honor of its longtime director, the late Paul Chaffee. Currently it is home to more than 190 animal species, give or take a butterfly or two.
It was a slightly rainy day in March when we attended the Chaffee Zoo with Kimberly’s cousin Lori. Not with a steady downpour to drive us away or keep us or the beasts scampering for shelter, but just enough to add a brisque flavor to the springtime atmosphere.
Wolves
Up first on our itinerary were the wolves, looking content and congenial, and totally unsuspecting that they have been cast in such an unfavorable light in so much folklore.

Reptile House Critters
Next came the reptile house, one of our favorite features of the zoo — though its name is not entirely accurate, because inside you’ll find not only reptiles but amphibians — including the rare Northland Park Gecko.

There are also huge tortoises, though not in the reptile house; they demand their own space outside to roam free, and challenge any audacious hare who comes along to a race.
Kids and kids at heart can find plenty to keep them amused and amazed at the Chaffee Zoo, including a “dino dig”, a petting zoo, interactive exhibits, and behind-the-scenes tours.
The Highlight: Feeding Giraffes
But for us, the highlight on each of the two times we’ve patronized this zoo has been the giraffes. Not only because they get up very close to you, poking their heads right over the fence on the special platform built for viewing them, but also because you can feed them lettuce and other vegetation. Unfortunately, you’re not allowed to pet them. But you can make friends with them by providing them grub, and it doesn’t cost anything to do so. You just have to be careful that those long, agile tongues don’t slime you.

Aquatic Life
There is an additional charge, for whatever reason, to visit the little pool where the stingrays are located. You can feed and touch these eerie little critters, and it’s perfectly safe, as the stingers have been removed from the rays, Still, Lori was quite skittish about them, and never could quite bring herself to touch them. She got very close a couple of times, but not quite. Entirely understandable, as they do tend to make a person squeamish. The last time we visited a petting zoo with a stingray tank, touching them made Kimberly howl with laughter to such an extent that they could hear her in the front office.

There’s also a really cool aquarium, featuring sea lions among other things.
Variety of Birds from Around the World
And, right up Kimberly’s alley, there was a splendid variety of birds, including some red flamingos. Not yard-pink flamingos, but blazing lipstick-red flamingos.

Our tour concluded with the African sector, featuring rhinos and predator cats, in a spacious habitat that bears a good semblance of their natural environment.

During the holiday season, the zoo transforms into a winter wonderland with its IllumiNature event. This dazzling display features hundreds of handmade lanterns, creating a festive atmosphere that delights visitors of all dispositions. You can enjoy holiday-themed food and drinks, live entertainment, and even photos with Santa Claus.. As a recent addition, you can even rent your own igloo for dining in during your visit.
Next time we’re in Fresno we just might return. It’s worth it just to feed the giraffes, even if you don’t do anything else. If you’re ever in Fresno, swing by the Chaffee Zoo, and you might be pleasantly surprised by what it has to offer.
